Washington Post: April 4, 2008 — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has not been shy about using gimmicks to try and nudge supporters into donating money online. There have been musical contests, and offers to let donors watch a debate with the former president or hit the road with daughter Chelsea Clinton.
Now comes the latest effort -- a fundraising page that lets donors choose where their money will be spent. The effort, called "MyPA" resembles a wedding gift registry, only Clinton backers will choose to direct money to yard signs, van rentals, radio ads or door hangers.
Clinton planned to e-mail supporters about the new option, telling them "starting today, you can decide just how your contributions will help us win Pennsylvania."
The campaign launches the effort in a bid to close the online fundraising gap that has helped Sen. Barack Obama maintain a significant fundraising edge, as reported in The Post this morning. While Obama raised more than $1 million a day over the internet, Clinton's pace has slowed since February. Supporters estimated her online take has been hovering around $500,000 per day.
Mac Cummings, the Clinton campaign's senior online finance adviser, called the "MyPA" page "a unique program that will further empower our grass-roots supporters."
