This Valentines Day, Earn Some Link Love

This Valentines Day, not only is it important to pamper your better halves, mothers, siblings and of course, clients, but also to spread a little timely love throughout the ocean of relationship and dating communities that, by and large, consider this holiday one of the biggest.

Whether you’re in the health industry, real estate business or are part of a large technology firm (wink), it’s always nice to talk to your audience about trending events and holidays like Valentines Day. But how would somebody who typically sells homes relate what they do to topics like love and relationships? Well, for somebody who’s had to pull water from a rock and successfully built a lake, I think it’s easy. But for those that need a little help, here is one example that may help you achieve earned visibility this Valentines Day.

Hypothetically, let’s say that you’re the owner of a hardware company. You don’t have much of an online presence, and the little that does exist rarely brings in business. Yet, you have a blog (always a good start). Valentines Day is fast approaching and despite your lack of an editorial calendar or dedicated blogger, you want to figure out a way to promote your products/services and effectively send value back to your site’s domain whilst leveraging love.

1)    Grab a (small) cup of coffee. More than one cup may make you scatterbrained and won’t allow you to zero in and adapt off of one genius idea.

2)    Remember what sort of resources and collateral you have at your disposal (including human!). There’s a reason why Terakeet prefers people to machines. To me, collective knowledge is the greatest resource. The web has plenty of information that can make you more knowledgeable. You may have heard of Google.

3)    Use those resources and knowledge to plant the seeds of, and further graft off those seeds until you’ve crafted, the perfect plan.

Let’s plant a seed; shall we? You’re a premier seller of hardware, and among the top consumers of hardware products are families or couples looking to expand, repair or modify their homes, correct? It’s winter season, so consider what folks are buying: heaters, HVAC units, and um, insulation? Sniff, Sniff; do I smell an idea? Why not create a quirky “How to” tutorial on how you and your loved one can collectively “do it yourself” this Valentines Day. A selfless and combined gift of warmth, no?

Sounds cheesy right? But we must remember the 4 rules of “sticky” content, CCTS:

Controversial
Celebrity
Topical
Sex (Bingo)

This is what sticks. In fact, it often times goes viral. Provided you’re not selling the service, you can’t lose money on this, right? Granted, there are probably a handful of similar videos scattered across the web already, but it’s not often you see them featured on major hardware sites. Trust me, I’ve looked.

Needless to say, it takes a little ingenuity to develop viable content strategies that will ultimately increase your chances of earned visibility. Valentines day is one of many timely happenings throughout the calendar year that can help boost your chances of doing so.  Despite the fact that you may not own Match.com, it’s certainly worth taking the time to creatively engineer unique strategies that play off of things like Valentines Day. They only come around once a year!
