Spinning Into The New Year
The Cause for the Cuse’s fundraising efforts hit the ground running, or spinning rather, with the most successful fundraising event in our 4-year history. In April, Cause for the Cuse teamed up with Urban Life Athletics for a spin class fundraiser that raised over $11,000 in one hour!
Led by Urban Life Trainer Megan Murphy, a Syracuse City School District graduate herself, a group of 20 spinners split into 4 teams spun 353 miles collectively. The teams were split up according to Terakeet’s internal business units to heighten the friendly competitive spirit and dub the event the Battle of the Business Units. Leading up to the event, team members asked their family and friends to sponsor their ride by either donating a set amount or by pledging a dollar amount per mile.
Our VP of Reputation Management Joseph Torrillo, another Syracuse City School District graduate, raised the most money for the event – $2,190! He pulled off a stellar social media fundraising campaign and even had last minute pledges rolling in while he was spinning in the event. All of his efforts earned him the Hustler Award for most donations earned. His brother and our COO Ralph Torrillo was right on Joseph’s heels in donations, earning $1,882.50 in pledges. However, Ralph beat out Joseph in their own brotherly competition of which Torrillo will spin more miles – great job, guys!
Thank you to Joseph, Ralph, and all of our spinners for working so hard to earn pledges, and thank you to our community partners at Urban Life Athletics, Lululemon, SaunaCuse, and A-1 Trophy for their support and donations to make this event such a success and so much fun!
Cause for the Cuse Donates to the Refugee Assistance Program
This fall, our committee received a very generous donation from our friends at O’Brien & Gere of school backpacks, each filled with school supplies and a handwritten note from an OBG employee. Since this donation felt extra special, the committee members wanted to make sure the supplies went to a special program.
Thankfully, our SCSD contact Michael Henesey put us in contact with Stephanie Horton-Centore, the SCSD Refugee Assistance Program Facilitator, also known as Bob’s School. Bob’s School’s mission is to create individualized services to assist and teach the growing number of refugees in Syracuse to help them become successful members of our community. Together with Michael and Stephanie, our committee decided that donating the filled backpacks to Bob’s School felt like a perfect fit since the supplies would help adult and children learners.
Upon visiting Bob’s School to drop off the supplies, a few of our members were happy to be able to meet a family from Bhutan and help their two sons pick out book bags in their favorite colors. We’re happy we can continue to contribute in a small way to keeping Syracuse a sanctuary city for refugee families in need.
2016 Cause for the Cuse Impact Report
Earlier in the year, the Cause for the Cuse committee wrapped up a successful 2016 by using over $8,000 raised to purchase supplies and clothing to support 27 schools within the district. Our committee members spent many hours pouring over lists, requests, and receipts to try to make our impact as widespread as possible with our resources.
The time spent shopping, interacting with people in the stores as we cleared shelves of supplies, and packing them all led to the humbling and rewarding experience of delivering the supplies, a yearly event that gets us into the schools that we serve and allow us to meet the administrators and students in person. It’s our committee’s favorite part of the year and we’re already looking forward to making a greater impact in 2017.
